It never seems to fail, when one thing goes awry, there are 50 more issues that pop up and try to vie for center stage. It is just the way it is and we have come to accept it. Thursdays are payroll, invoicing, bill paying and general accounting/paperwork. It starts first thing in the morning and goes pretty much all the way through lunch, into the early afternoon...that is if all goes according to plan. I don't think we have actually had a Thursday go according to that plan since the school year started, but it is a goal to shoot for. This Thursday was no exception. It started first thing Wednesday morning with an email from a parent requesting a meeting on Thursday. I already know that Thursday is going to be rough. A morning meeting in the middle of when payroll is supposed to be uploaded, is never a good thing, but it was the only time they could meet with me and I wanted to get this meeting completed so we could move forward with our program...so in the middle it was. Next was the text from one of my sous chefs at 3:15AM, Thursday. Forgot to pick up my knife roll when I walked out of the door at home, Thursday. Not enough zucchini for the vegetable blend, Thursday. Late produce delivery, containing the zucchini, Thursday. That is one of Murphy's Laws. When you need product from your supplier, the delivery will always be late. I was running from one thing to the next, meeting to prep, prep to payroll, payroll to prep and then to another meeting. Somehow I got it done but then had to help direct a driver to get his truck out of our delivery area; "How do you get a truck out of here?", "How the hell do I know? You are the driver, not me." Ah, Thursday, how I welcome thee. If I didn't embrace the difficulty that Thursday has become, I would probably have lost it a long time ago. Lunch service is about to start and what's this? We have all of our volunteers, on time and ready to go before service?! Wow, that doesn't happen very often. Payroll is uploading and no issues! Lunch monitors show up for Upper School lunch...wait a minute...maybe Thursday is not such a bad day after all.
Not all of us are celebrity chefs. Some of us do it because we love food and that is enough. Nothing beats when someone notices that you went the little extra to make their moment memorable. Those are the moments we live for.

All in the timing
Well, our new dishwasher has survived the first two weeks. The major hurdle has been cleared, since it is not easy getting used to a new environment, let alone one you have never stepped foot in, before. It is nice to see that they are getting along, becoming more comfortable with the position and all it entails. Soon, we will be adding more tasks to their day, to see how they cope with the added responsibilities. If the last two weeks are any indication, it should be a non-event. Which will be a welcome change for us, these past few weeks.
